3/ Bike Smart, the official guide to cycling in NYC, on mixed zones:
— John Track (@johntrack) July 1, 2019
Mixing zones are approaches to intersections where cyclists and turning vehicles merge.
DO: Look for turning traffic. Merge in front of or behind cars. Take the full lane as necessary.
4/ DON'T: Do not hug the curb. Do not pass on the left of a turning vehicle. If vehicles are turning in front of you, move away from the direction of the turn.https://t.co/dorVWPSWLc pic.twitter.com/x1Gp7rVFqR

5/ This recommendation is dangerous and is in conflict with the critique of people on bikes who do not use the bike lane. Moving out of a dedicated lane and merging into moving traffic has the risk of another vehicle fast following and with lane priority.

6/Here, a car accelerates and misses the turning lane; a taxi follows quickly behind. If I tried to move away from the direction of the turn I would have turned into a speeding taxi.
